Who Am I ?

By Timmy Woods

(a commentary on my position in today’s society)

Who am I?
To take this privileged perfection?
Created by the desires of the powerful
Handed to me by a melting pot
Passed off as "everybody"
Yet only for the chosen

Who am I?
To be better because of birth?
To be better than those
Who earned their place?
Yet they are unrecognized
Criminalized, ostracized
Forced to take sides

Who am I?
To take benefit from my height?
To money my skin and my "religion"
To infer an education
Or accept a sexual situation
That celebrates only my position
And makes "the others" the opposition

Who am I?
My gender is no better
Than any of the others
They just want true nature
Yet they get no cover
So why can’t you nurture
Like you would your own brother?

Who am I?
My body is no better
Than the person in the gutter
Should I step over
Or help to be stronger?
Do they deserve less respect
Because I am so circumspect?

Who am I?
To say older is better but
Not for the others
Because they are Mothers
And need to be young?
Why is 50 so majestic
For me
Yet tragic for she?

Who am I?
Ergo - what have I become
If I decide to be numb
To the other humans?

Who am I?

“I’m a 6’4” white male. Perceived to be heterosexual. Perceived to be Catholic/Christian. I was born and raised in Ireland until I was 30 and have been living in WA for a little over 20 years now.”
