White Privilege

Lives in Florida

By Jonathan Leslie

16 years old; just got my license,
Flashing lights behind me along with sirens.
Kid, you’re going 55 in a 25 that’s reckless driving,
Sorry, I gotta give you a ticket.
Didn’t ask me to get outta the car.
Call my lawyer neighbor up...
Don’t worry I’ll fix it.
String my racquets for a year,
You’re in the clear.
Changed it from a speeding violation,
To a muffler citation.
No points on my license,
No bucks from my wallet,
Insurance rates remain the same.
It’s almost like this is a game.
A game tilted one way, everyday, every way.
As a naive youngster I didn’t give it a second thought,
Now I know this is what my ancestors bought,
A system for some but not for all.
