Report from 2025
By Miriam Bassuk
No way to encapsulate this period.
No rhyme or reason can iron out
our daily terror squashed deep
in the gutter of our bellies. What
makes it hard, there are no safe-
guards against a regime that lays
waste to all we hold dear, a regime
that doesn’t give a flippin’ shit
for anything beyond accumulating
wealth. The richest man in the world
launches his porcupine quills
to sting us all and fantasizes
how one day, he will vacation on Mars.
Miriam Bassuk’s poems have appeared in Snapdragon, Borderless, PoetsWest Literary Journal, and 3 Elements Review. She was one of the featured poets in WA 129 project sponsored by Tod Marshall, the Washington State poet laureate.
