Abiola Regan is a Canadian poet who writes to process and make sense of the world around her. She can also be found co-hosting the progressive parenting podcast Gaining Mom-entum, where we try our best to parent our kids for the world we want them to grow up in and the world we live in now.

His innocence, a yang to the yin of devastation

Warm, dark eyes blinking love and acceptance.

A desire to preserve childhood until he’s grown,

Weighed against the need to keep him informed,

Knowing there’s too much beyond our control.

His brown skin draws in those leading with light

And sends out a flare for those seeking to harm.

His beauty poses a threat. His curiosity, an offense.

But we can’t live on eggshells. Not every moment.

So we come from a place of brightness, revel in joy.

The sound of his laugh, an antidote to the hatred

Using it to cloak ourselves in hope, combat the fear.

His presence, a catalyst for changing the world

An oyster and rose-colours for him to behold.
