Resurrection
By Keith Holyoak
“The Fun Never Ends” by Yaron Dotan
A few at first expressed surprise
That Christ came back so corpulent
(Transcendent less than immanent),
With pasty body bags for eyes,
Head crowned by an orange mitre
Wrought for an imitation fighter
Wrestling under a circus tent—
Not quite the image we expected
For One so freshly resurrected.
Yet white crowds hail the holy lies,
Roaring as He struts out to preach
The gospel in a noisome speech
That makes those lies metastasize,
While couples toss gold wedding rings
To Him as humble offerings—
Stiff arms saluting, all beseech
Their Lord to smite the weak who sin,
Just like in Rome or old Berlin.
In “Resurrection”, Keith Holyoak reimagines the ominous “rough beast” of Yeat’s classic poem “The Second Coming” as a twisted carnival barker masquerading as a messiah. Yaron Dotan created “The Fun Never Ends” completely independently, as one in a series of paintings called “Senile Generals”, satirizing the abuse of power. We’ve juxtaposed the poem and painting to create a joint depiction of the Fascist Fool.
