A Single Bird
By Peter Asco
It is the sudden swooping of a hawk
that reveals how many doves
had found shelter in my tree
It’s when it lands on a branch
that I know which one is the swiftest of the birds,
and when in the dark it quietly awaits...
it tells me of the pitfalls of innocence
and the risks of carelessness
As the screeching darting of a mockingbird
alerts the community to its presence
I’m witness to the difference a single bird can make.
